Exciting Progress On The Illawarra Women's Trauma Recovery Centre Site Build

Published November 24th 2023

Recently, the Illawarra Women's TRC team had the pleasure of visiting the build site along with women who have been part of our co-design process.

The TRC's Director of Therapeutic Programs, Wellbeing and Self-Determination, Sam, captured some footage on the day, along with the quotes below from some of the women as they walked through the site.

"They actually listened to us. If they hadn't of, I wouldn't have come back. You can tell others feel the same way by how many of us continue to attend and show up."

***
"They incorporated what we spoke about."

***

"This has been a great process. Being able to walk through and see how they have implemented our feedback has been magic. It's given us back agency."

***

"Not knowing a lot about the codesign process, I was sceptical about how much of it was just going to be lip service - but it wasn't like that at all, I really felt listened to and heard."

Acknowledgement of Country

The Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre is situated on the land of the Dharawal Nation. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and we pay our respects to Elders past and present for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia.

This land is, was, and always will be traditional Aboriginal land. We acknowledge that we work in the context of generations of resilient, strengths-based, holistic resistance to violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

We commit to actively supporting and promoting the voices of Aboriginal people and organisations in our work. We fully support the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
